How do you transpose sheet music for the clarinet for the piano ?

The most common soprano clarinet is pitched in B-Flat, meaning when you play a C on the instrument, the note that sounds in concert ';piano'; pitch is the B-flat just below the note played. So...

If you have piano (or flute or oboe) music in front of you and the note to be played is a third-line treble clef B-flat, you must play a third-space C. A first line E-flat is a first-space F and so on. The formal way of stating the transposition rule is that the clarinetist plays a major second higher.

A bit of practice allows one to become fairly good at this. When in high-school, I played oboe parts in band because I could transpose them at sight. You can too.

Good luck.
